Devastating fires destroy homes in Wairewa
Overnight bush fires spread from Buchan to Wairewa. Eleven homes were lost as fire raced through the valley heading towards the coast.
A number of people managed to make their way to the Wairewa hall where they were supported by CFA strike teams sent to protect the town.
No lives were lost but many livestock perished due to the extreme conditions. The historic Wairewa trestle bridge was badly damaged with one half of the bridge burnt. A passionate local was able to save the other half of the bridge using an excavator to move the burning sections away before the whole thing went up.
